The Nebbiolo, which is divided into three sub-varieties: Lampia, Michet, and Rosé, is difficult to grow due to its extreme sensitivity to different soil variations. However, this delicate fruit produces a very persistent wine: the Barolo, which is impossible to discuss in terms of one only characteristic. This notable wine can be interpreted in plenty of different ways and characterized by distinctive aromas and flavors; thanks to the heterogeneity of the territories, the many important crus, and its various vineyard expositions.
In the Langhe, various soils and mineral deposits are present, which contribute to the countless interpretations of Barolo. Sedimentary clay, the Sant’Agata Marls: chalk marls mixed with grey-blue sandstone, Diano’s sandstone: a dark grey sandstone interspersed with clay, and the formations of Lequio: red-gray stones striated with gray marls, are the important variances of the Langhe soil. The resulting Barolo is a fine, as well as, strong wine.

2019 VINTAGE
As for the tastings, I can conclude that 2019 is a truly exceptional vintage, in absolute terms one of the best of the last 40 years, comparable to 1982, 1988, 1996, 1997 and of course 2016. The year of balance and immediacy of style, characterized by perfect phenolic ripeness that has been translated into density and elegance.
Wines with great freshness from the nose, which highlights all the varietal characteristics of the sub-areas, small red fruits, officinal notes, crispness, tension, floral nuances and density, with mouthfeel of great salinity and power, beautiful exaltation of the fruit, in terms of elegance, tension and depth. A year of great balance right from the start, but at the same time the complete phenolic ripeness of the raw material suggests that it will be a vintage with great drinkability and remarkable aging potential.

All this, combined with a rather high number of vines and enological styles, make South Tyrol one of the most dynamic production areas of the entire Italian wine scene.
The Southern Tyrolean area also offers red grape production. The most widespread are Lagrein, Muscat Rosé, and Vernatsch. However, some international varieties such as Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zweigelt are equally popular.

Lagrein: Grown on little more than 500 hectares, Lagrein is the native vine of South Tyrol par excellence. After a period of decline it was resumed with great vigor during the 70s of the past century, with ever-growing success among the public.

Pinot Noir: present in South Tyrol since the nineteenth century, grown on little more than 520 hectares mainly in the high altitude areas such as Mazon, Gleno and Pinzano, the so-called Blauburgunder is a juicy and lively red wine, not excessively complex, that brings out the aromas of undergrowth.

St. Magdalener: Real viticultural heritage of the area around Bolzano, St. Magdalener is cultivated in a sunny zone of around 160 hectares that corresponds to the Classic area (Santa Maddalena, Santa Giustina, San Pietro, Rencio and Coste). It’s a blend made with great prevalence of Vernatsch and small contribution of Lagrein.

Other Red Wines: The so-called ‘Bordeaux blends’ of South Tyrol have a historical great success, thanks to the peculiar characteristics that international vines develop in the unique Tyrol’s microclimate. These are wines marked by freshness and drinkability, with quality results that definitely make this area one of the ‘homelands’ of international blends in the world.

Sweet Wines: Another typology of great importance of South Tyrol, sweet wines have here a success not comparable to other areas of Italy, derivating in part from the rigidity of the climate. Whether it’s late harvest or wines obtained by drying traditionally from white varieties such as Gewürztraminer or Gold Muskateller, recently sweet wines from red varieties have been spreading, such as Lagrein and Muscat Rosé.

2021 VINTAGE

2021 vintage has benefited a lot from a harvest that took place later compared to previous years, but in optimal weather conditions. Thanks to the strong temperature range which occured throughout all spring – the temperatures measured in April 2021 have been the lowest recorded during the last 20 years – phenolic ripening of fruits resulted perfect and in particular helped white grapes to develop great aromatic potential. Frosts have been quite rare, but rainfalls – absent during spring and very copious between July and September – were offset by a beautiful end of summer, which allowed the closure of the ripening in perfect conditions. In general, the ‘whites’ (of excellent medium quality, with cases of absolute quality) are better than the ‘reds’ (good medium quality, with some excellent interpretations among Pinot Noir and Lagrein, for which we can predict one of the best vintages ever). As usual, the preventive work carried out in the vineyards is becoming more and more important since the cold months, when it is possible to guide the growth of the vines according to the season that they are going to face. We also have to consider a generalized delay of the harvesting period, which even reached two weeks during 2021.

RISERVA 2017
In vintages that can be considered ‘challenging’ – like 2017, which was undoubtedly dry – we can measure how far the management of the vineyard and the production of Brunello have come in Montalcino. Here takes place the production of wines characterized by crispness and stylistic sharpness, pleasing olfactory finesse – played especially on small red fruits – and not suffering of tannic excess at all. This is, indeed, the result of many factors, such as the care of soils and plants, a decisive selection of grapes on the sorting table, followed by a wine making process which takes into account the high quality of this raw material and preserves it.

Brunello di Montalcino, DOCG since 1980, is produced in Tuscany about 40 km south of Siena, in the area of Montalcino. The wine takes its name from this Unesco World Heritage Site. The Montalcino area is made up of about 24,000 hectares, although only 15% of these are dedicated to grape cultivation. The great Sangiovese variety, from which Brunello di Montalcino is made, is very sensitive to the land on which it is grown. Here in Montalcino, several different geological typologies intersect, such as clay, tuff, and so-called original rocks, limestone and marl. These last two are found at the higher elevations. The higher location of the plants, together with a rich mosaic of variables, have determined the character of this Brunello, since its origin. The plants in the territory of Montalcino grow at elevations that range from about 120 to 650 meters above sea level. The cultivation area can be divided into four sub-zones, oriented according to the cardinal directions.

The most common method of vine training is that of spurred cordon. The Mediterranean climate tends to be dry, although some inflections of the continental climate are present. The nearby Monte Amiata often helps mitigate meteorological events of great intensity. In the cellar, Brunello di Montalcino typically brings together several plots located in different areas of the cultivation zone to guarantee a wine not too homogeneous nor too distinguished by a single cru. Recently however, numerous wineries have developed a concept of viticulture that privileges wines obtained from a single vineyard, beyond the average geographical placement. The aging of Brunello di Montalcino takes place in wood for at least two years during which the producer may choose the dimensions of the barrels. This is followed by 4 months in the bottle. In order to earn the distinction of Riserva, the wine must be aged for six years, following a period of at least two years of maturation in wood.

The plants in the territory of Montalcino grow at altitudes ranging from 100 to 661 meters above sea level. The cultivation area, for climatic and soil homogeneity, can be divided into four sub-zones (quadrants), oriented according to the cardinal directions, then northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest, which have cusps in the locality of Poggio Civitella, precisely 661 meters above sea level, then descend into the different territories of competence. The most used training system is the spur cordon. The climate tends to be dry, although there are some inflections of the continental climate. The nearby Monte Amiata helps mitigate weather events of great intensity. In the winery, Brunello di Montalcino is typically created through a blend of different parcels located in different zones of the cultivation area to ensure a wine which is not too homogeneous nor too different from a single cru. Recently, however, many wineries have developed a concept of viticulture that privileges wines obtained from a single vineyard, beyond the average geographical location, and they started interpreting in their own way a concept of ‘cru’ that will surely represent one of the trends for the future.

Both in winter and spring, 2018 was marked by many intense rains which lasted until June.
August and September as well presented rainy days but in a milder way, while July was dry and warm. There were no heat peaks, only the month of July was more constant while September had lower temperatures with interesting temperature ranges.

The 2018 vintage, in general, could recall 90s’ vintages, or to come to more recent years, the 2008 vintage.
Briefly, it was an important harvest for those who dared and risked by bringing the grapes to full maturity and by sacrificing some bunches.
It is a vintage with great characteristics of longevity, with a Sangiovese that proved to be very territorial, in short, capable of showing all its complexity.
As a result we have wines of beautiful colour, with strong alcoholic content but well balanced by high acidity values, which then result juicy and fresh on the palate. Frank aromas, broad bouquets of scents, while the palate is elegant, with soft and ripe tannins.
Complexity, without losing finesse and territoriality.

The first notary report documenting wine production in this same area dates back to the XIVth century. These days almost 7200 hectares of vineyards are registered as DOCG classification for the production of Chianti Classico.

The Sangiovese grape, the variety from which the Chianti Classico is produced, is rather sensitive to the characteristics of the terroir where it grows. In this area, different geological structures coexist, such as clay, tuff, Chianti boulders, limestone, and marl. These soil features combined with the different expositions of the vineyards and altitudes give rise to a complex number of aromatic and gustative variables in the wines. In order to earn the Chianti Classico appellation and the DOCG classification, it is mandatory to comply with the established set of rules. The grapes must be harvested in the Chianti Classico production area and the wine must contain at least 80% of Sangiovese grapes. The percentage can be supplemented with other varieties up to 20%. Native grapes such as Colorino and Canaiolo, as well as other international varietals, for instance Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, may be used to enhance the Sangiovese.
The Chianti Classico must be released on the market, no sooner than October the 1st of the year following the harvest. For the Chianti Classico, labelled as Riserva, the minimum ageing time is 24 months.

This notable wine can be interpreted in different ways and characterized by distinctive aromas and flavors thanks to the heterogeneity of the territories, the many important crus, and its various vineyard expositions. In the Langhe, various soils and mineral deposits are present, which contribute to the many interpretations of Barolo.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CRU AND MGA
This year, the tasting of the various Barolo 2018 followed a unique and brand new criterion. The samples were divided by municipality and then by Crus, and tasted following a geographical path from north to south for each side of the Barolo area.
This division allowed to register every single nuance among wines produced in small areas with the same pedoclimatic conditions, thus to carry out a more accurate analysis.

An interesting digression about the terms “Cru” and “MGA” is also necessary.

During the 90s, Barolo undergoes a radical transformation and is completely rediscovered by the oenological world: starting as an astringent and an austere wine, it instead becomes harmonious, free from oxidation, rich in new aromas and specific characteristics of Nebbiolo variety.
As a consequence, market demand and vine areas spread, as well as wineries and labels, who feel the need to distinguish themselves from each other by giving to their own wines vineyards’ names, both dialectal or invented.
To avoid confusion, it is necessary to permanently name the different vine areas – the most ancient as well as the most recent ones – by municipality.
The Consortium for the Protection of Barolo and Barbaresco plays in this regard a fundamental role that ends up with the inclusion of 181 areas in the new regulation brought out in 2010, which officially defines at administrative level the main denominations and the smaller areas.

Thus were born the MGA, Menzioni Geografiche Aggiuntive (additional geographical mentions), called this way as required by the law and the Ministerial Decree in force at the time. Piedmont, specifically for Barolo and Barbaresco, is the only Italian region using this new denomination method.

But what’s the difference between Cru and MGA? It would be an understatement to say that MGA are just newer Crus. The mention is a geographical indication that is added to the main denomination, thus indicating a smaller area. Compared to the concept of “Vigna” (vineyard), with its exclusively corporate dimension, the mention has a more collective value instead, concerning more producers. On the other hand, Cru leads the same way to identify a specific production area, where several factors – even not natural – give the wine unique and particular characteristics, different from those you can found in other wines, however produced in nearby locations.

MGA and Cru are not the same, but both are valid as Barolo “sub-appellation”, to better identify origin and peculiarities that otherwise would be difficult to distinguish in such a wide wine scene.

The diffusion of this vine in vast areas of southern Italy has endowed it with great adaptability to the cultivation zone, and made it develop at least two distinct varieties: Aglianico properly so-called, mainly grown in Taurasi, Campania, and Aglianico del Vulture, from Basilicata. More recently, extensive investigations carried out through DNA analysis allowed to establish that Aglianico and Aglianico del Vulture are actually two biotypes of the same variety, having the same genetic identity. Aglianico del Vulture’s grapes are small, with blue-black coloured berries from which full-bodied masses are obtained. But they are also rich in acidity and tannins, which generally need long aging before bottling. The result are wines of intense ruby red colour with garnet nuances. To the nose they usually recall ripe red fruit or jam, and spicy notes as well as balsamic touches are never lacking. To the mouthfeel these wines are deep, sapid, of strong character and suitable for aging, for sure.

The producing area extends for about 45.000 hectares and 1326 meters above sea level in the territory of Mount Vulture. Nowadays, in the crater area, we find the two lakes of Monticchio, while all around hills of clayey origin between 500-800 meters above sea level lie, surrounded by lush vegetation. Aglianico del Vulture vine has found in this area the perfect characteristics. The igneous rocks of volcanic origin, together with the cool temperate climate and the isolated position, makes this soil particularly fertile and suitable for the cultivation of vineyards, in an enclosed and protected environment. The wine we finally find in the glass is the expression of all these unique pedoclimatic conditions.
